Skeme began writing in 1979 at the age of 15. He “got up” on the 1, 2, 3, 5, A, CC, and D lines and also hit the 4, E, F, M, and J lines of the New York City subway system, quickly going “ALL CITY”. After ’bombing’ the insides with one of Graff’s most recognizable hand styles, Skeme ventured to the outsides in 1980 and went on to execute a myriad of style laden pieces, varrying in artistic range and complexity from ultra legible straight letters to graduate level ’Wild Styles’. Considering himself a letter purist in the tradition of Graffiti’s pioneers and greats, Skeme went on to produce what are arguably some of the most iconic masterpieces of his era. Ultimately catching the eye of Film Producer/Director Tony Silver, and famed scpto/photographer, Henry Chalfant, he earned a spot in the iconic groundbreaking HipHop documentary ’Style Wars’. Appearing along with his mother, he quickly became both a national and international household name.
His time in the cultural spotlight was however, short lived, due to his Mother “suggesting” he “leave” the house and join the Army. Thirty years later, Skeme returned to find that the artform was alive and well, he soon jumped back into the fray and after a few rust busting sessions, has regained his footing. Today Skeme’s work is better than ever, we invite you to enjoy
Skeme also enjoyed membership and affiliation with some of the top writing crews of the day to include: INDS, TDS, TMT, TNT, TED, and 3YB. In early 82’, Skeme, along with his mother, was featured in the pioneering documentary, “Style Wars”, produced by Henry Chalfant and Tony Silvers, which showcased Graff and B-Boying, two of Hip Hop’s. Aug 08, 2018 Audience Reviews for Style Wars Jan 15, 2010 An original, and simultaneously THE original, documentary on graffiti culture, and by extension and to a lesser degree, Hip-Hop culture in general.
